GUARDIANS

What is guardianship?

By law boarding schools in the United Kingdom must ensure that all international students have a legally appointed guardian, who will welcome them into their home and ensure their well-being during half terms and Exeats. Close communication with the schools is essential and our guardians will attend any important functions such as parents evening if required. Any time spent with the guardian/host family should be happy and provide a stable, cultural and learning environment both linguistically and socially.

Responsibilities of the guardian/host family.

  • To provide a warm and welcoming home for the student for Exeats and Half-terms, but if the student requests to go elsewhere, then Cotswold Guardians must give prior permission in advance.

  • Be at home when the student is there and provide suitable living and studying accommodation.

  • To set out the ‘house rules’ and ‘code of conduct’ at the very beginning and make the student aware of these rules.

  • Liaise with Cotswold Guardians over welfare or educational matters where there is concern.

  • Wherever reasonably possible, be contactable at all times to deal with any emergencies or illness.

  • To notify Cotswold Guardians of any change of address or home circumstances.

  • To liaise with Cotswold Guardians in order to make any necessary travel arrangements at the beginning, or end  of Exeats or Half Terms.

  • To attend relevant school functions, such as Parents’ Evenings wherever possible, if requested by the parents.

  • Not to accept paying guests into, or be running a bed and breakfast service within the home, whilst providing guardianship services.

  • Keep mobile phone contact with the student when they are not in their direct care.

  • Complete a registration form supplied by the school and Cotswold Guardians.

  • Allow a representative of the school or Cotswold Guardians to inspect the suitability of the accommodation once a year.

  • Agree to any induction or training offered by Cotswold Guardians.

  • Understand fully the role and responsibilities of being a guardian/host.  This includes the signed agreement with you, and Cotswold Guardians, not to undertake guardianship for any other student privately.

  • To arrange Public Liability Insurance cover for the student.  This is usually done by including the student in an existing policy.

  • Inform the car insurance company that they will be transporting a student from time to time under the term ‘social’ use of the car.

  • Inform Cotswold Guardians if the student is not returning home at the end of the term.

  • Agree to respect the student's privacy and cultural and religious background, beliefs and dietary needs.
